He Knew Me Then, Stories Behind the Songs

I’ve often been asked, “Of all the songs you’ve written, what is your favorite?” He Knew Me Then would be my favorite. If the Lord came along and said, “Dallas just pick one of your songs and that’s the only one you can sing from now on,” this is the one I would choose.

I wrote this song in 1974.

He knew me then, He knows me now, And He died for me. He loved me then, and He loves me now, Oh, how can it be? He saw my face, He knew the place that I would be today. He knew me then, He knows me now, And He loves me.

Some people say, that He died one day, But that was long ago. Well, I’m sure that He was a very good man, But me He did not know. Listen, my friend, what I say is true- That He knew me and He knew you. He knew you then, He knows you now, And He loves you.
